Construction industry is one of the oldest industries of human civilization. With time, the face and nature of construction is also changing. Rapid infrastructure development and huge demand for residential sector has forced engineers to cut the construction time. With continually improving techniques and recent advancements, we have been able to reduce the construction time required to complete the project. Use of precast concrete members is one such method wherein we can reduce the time required for construction.
Advantages of Precast construction are as follows: –
Independent Activity: – Precast concrete member construction is an independent activity which doesn’t have any predecessor. This gives edge over the activities pending in the project which results in increase in speed of construction.
Quality: – Precast Concrete Mixer are casted in casting yard. These members can be supervised with much ease and ensured high quality than compared to cast in situ.
Swift Operations: – In the areas where there are heavy traffic congestions, Precast system helps you to fix the problem of traffic diversion. If you choose precast system you need to block traffic for limited time.
Architectural effect: – It is easy to give architectural effects in precast construction. It depends on the form used for precast construction hence at times when there are some shapes which are not possible in cast in situ, precast construction helps you to achieve the desired shape.
Today precast construction is used widely in world for buildings and bridges. With these benefits comes few challenges which shall be encountered while using Precast Concrete structures. These challenges are as below: –
High accuracy: – During time of precast construction one must keep high accuracy for constructing precast concrete members. As these members are going to fix with each other with some locking mechanism. Hence small deviation at precast yard will lead to big problem at site.
Requires Precast Yard: – For precast concrete members we need small piece of land. There might be places where there is congestion and hence precast constructions becomes difficult. Hence requirement of land shall be thought before deciding precast construction.
Transportation and lifting equipment: – For any precast concrete member to bring to site we need transportation facility and crane or hydra which can lift and place it in trailer at precast yard. Same equipment is needed on site to fix the position at site.
With both its advantage and challenges choice of precast construction shall be done after thorough study of feasibility. But overall, its speed of construction and the finishing type makes precast a better choice than traditional cast in situ construction.
